Abstract

It has been adjudged that cataloguing is highly technical to understand, therefore there is need for socialization and externalization forms of tacit knowledge capture technique to be adopted by cataloguers. It is also in this regard that this study investigated the influence of tacit knowledge capture techniques on job performance (JP) of catalogers in university libraries in Oyo State. Descriptive research design was adopted. Population consisted of 50 cataloguers in university libraries in Oyo State. Total enumeration sampling technique was adopted as the sampling technique for this study as well. The reliability coefficient for each of the variable ranged from 0.70 to 0.95. Data collected was analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Findings revealed an average level of job performance among the cataloguers (Mean = 2.54). It was also found that externalization (Mean = 3.18) is the most prevalent knowledge capture technique. The test of hypotheses revealed that socialization form of tacit knowledge capture technique has significant influence on JP (Adj. R2 = .126; p = 0.007) while externalization as a form of tacit knowledge capture was found not to significantly influence JP (Adj. R2 = .023; p = .149). Jointly, only socialization was found to statistically significantly influence JP (Adj.R2 = .131, F(2, 47) = 4.694, p < 0.05). The study concluded that only socialization as a form of tacit knowledge capture technique can actually contribute to job performance. The study recommended that heads of libraries need to make their library staff see the need for them to actually carry out tasks outside their job description. This will make them to be more committed to their libraries. Keywords: Cataloguers, Knowledge Management, Tacit Knowledge, Knowledge Capture, Technical Services, Job Performance Word Count: 274
