Abstract
Institutional performance has the potential to provide a wide range of benefits to educational institutions such as increased efficiencies from economies of scale, increased power, higher survival rates, higher profits, and increased prestige for institutional members. However, preliminary investigations revealed that institutional performance of State-owned tertiary institutions is perceived to be on the decline resulting in weak strategic plans, inconsistent recruitment processes, poor research output, inadequate teaching and all these have negative impact on Nigeria's socioeconomic development. Hence, this study investigated the influence of Work Ethics (WE) on Institutional Performance (IP) of selected State-owned tertiary institutions, Oyo State. Cross-sectional survey research design was adopted for this study. Population consists of 2,237 staff of the selected institutions with a sample size of 329 staff determined through Raosoft sample size determinant. Stratified random sampling technique was used to select staff from the top and middle management levels in the selected institutions. A validated questionnaire was used to collect data. The reliability co-efficient for the constructs of this study are: IP = 0.83; WE = 0.83; and Ọmọlúwàbí leadership (ỌL) 0.95. Data collected was analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Findings revealed that WE had significant influence on all measures of IP: Effectiveness (Adj R2=0.377; p=0.000, Q2 =0.226), Efficiency (Adj R2=0.572; p=0.000, Q2 =0.321), Quality service delivery (Adj R2=0.628; p=0.000, Q2 =0.472). Ọmọlúwàbí leadership significantly moderated the interaction between WE and IP (β= 0.129, t= 1.985, p=0.048, Q2 = (0.315). This study concluded that WE significantly influenced IP and ỌL significantly moderated the interaction between WE and IP of State-owned tertiary institution, Oyo State, Nigeria. The study recommended that management of institutions should intensify effort towards the reinforcement of Work Ethics sub-variables while embracing Ọmọlúwàbí leadership style at all levels which will go a long way in yielding superior performance.
