Job Characteristics, Institutional Support and Law Librarians’ Commitment in Southwest, Nigeria

Abstract
The commitment of law librarians’ is highly important because it is the difference between accurate research skills on the one hand and uncoordinated error-prone library services on the other hand. However, scholars rarely examine law librarians’ commitment. This study therefore examined the influence of job characteristics and institutional support on the commitment of law librarians’ in Southwest, Nigeria. Descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. A structured questionnaire was adopted as the instrument for data collection. The study population consists of 49 law librarians’ in Southwest, Nigeria. The entire population was included in the study due to the small size of the population. The quantitative data collection was analysed using both descriptive and inferential statistics. The study found a high level of law librarians’ commitment (Mean = 3.01). The study also found a reasonable level of job characteristics (Mean = 3.23) among the respondents. Similarly, results indicate that a seemingly reasonable number of law librarians’ get support from their institutions and organisations (Mean = 2.83). The test of hypothesis showed that both job characteristics (Adj. R2 = 0.27, p≤ 0.05) and institutional support (Adj. R2 = 0.41, p≤ 0. 05) individually have significant influence on the commitment of the respondents. Multiple regression analysis also revealed a significant combined influence of institutional support at 52% and job characteristics at 48% on the commitment of the respondents. The study concluded that job characteristics and institutional support are essential in enhancing the commitment of law librarians’ in Southwest, Nigeria. It was therefore recommended that there is a need for capacity development and reorientation for law librarians’ to ensure the robust input of their skills into law library productivity.
