Abstract
The psychology of colour plays a crucial role in creating engaging and stimulating surroundings for children, particularly in leisure centre settings. This study aims to investigate the impact of colour on children's emotions, behaviours, and experiences within such environments. Understanding the psychological effects of different hues empowers leisure centre designers and operators to craft spaces that optimize children's involvement, happiness, and overall well-being. To achieve these objectives, a case study research approach was employed. Five diverse case studies were selected, comprising one local and four international children's museums. These case studies were thoroughly assessed using parameters of colours identified from relevant literature on colour psychology. The findings of the study revealed that the colours yellow, blue, orange, and green were well-utilized both on the exterior and interior of the buildings in the selected children's museums. These colours were strategically integrated to evoke specific emotional responses and influence children's experiences within the spaces. Drawing insights from the case studies, this research proposes a design for a children's museum situated in NNPC Estate Chevron Drive, Lekki. By incorporating lessons learned from the case studies, the proposed design aims to create an optimal environment for children's play and exploration, taking into consideration the psychological impact of colour. In conclusion, the study emphasizes that colour must be a primary consideration when designing functional and effective children's leisure centres. The strategic use of colour can significantly influence children's emotions, behaviours, and engagement levels. By carefully selecting and incorporating colours into the design, leisure centres can create an environment that fosters positive experiences, enhances children's overall well-being, and promotes a sense of joy and excitement during their visit.
