Abstract

In tertiary institutions across Nigeria and Oyo State in particular, librarians have been tasked with managing vast information resources, curating specialised knowledge, and supporting the scholarly activities of students and faculty. This critical role is rooted in a dual requirement which includes the need to possess the requisite information management competencies and the imperative to remain motivated in a challenging and ever-evolving work environment for effective job performance. This study, therefore, investigated the influence of information management competence and motivational factors on librarians' job performance in selected tertiary institutions in Oyo State. The study adopted a survey research design with a population of 110 librarians from 10 tertiary institutions in Oyo State. A total enumeration method was used to select all the librarians for the study. A structured questionnaire was used for data collection, while descriptive and inferential statistics were used for data analysis. The findings revealed that there was a moderate to high job performance, a high level of information management competence, and strong motivational factors among librarians in tertiary institutions in Oyo State. Results from the hypotheses showed that information management competence (ß=0.680, t=7.65, p<0.01) and motivational factors (ß=0.620, t=6.75, p<0.01) respectively influence job performance among the librarians. It was also found that both information management competence (ß=0.450, t=4.50, p<0.05) and motivational factor (ß=0.400, t=4.00, p<0.05) had a combined influence on job performance of librarians in tertiary institutions in Oyo State. The study established that competencies in information management and a supportive motivational climate are both essential for optimal performance of librarians. The study, therefore, recommended that libraries should invest in up-to-date ICT infrastructure and software tools in academic libraries that will enable librarians to apply newly acquired technical skills effectively and improve their productivity.
