Inadequate solid waste disposal practices can lead to environmental degradation and public health hazards. This study is therefore, aimed at investigating the attitudes of people towards solid waste disposal and to generate information on sound waste disposal practices. This study investigated the attitudes of residents in Ilorin towards solid waste disposal and identified effective waste disposal practices. The study utilized Geographic Information System (GIS) technology to locate households and collect data from residents in Ilorin. Population distribution of the respondents from their various locations was detected from the map generated by the GIS. Data were collected through a survey questionnaire administered to residents in their households. The study found that residents of Ilorin expressed significant concerns about their environment and were aware of several environmental issues caused by unsustainable practices. The top three environmental issues identified were garbage collection, drainage and floods, as well as wastewater and sewage. Despite variation in age, gender, income level, and educational level, over half of the respondents were willing to source separate the garbage for effective waste collection. The majority of respondents also expressed their willingness to pay more for a better garbage collection service. The findings showed that residents living in medium- and low- density areas were more willing to pay for better garbage disposal services than those living in high-density areas.
