Abstract

Students' academic achievement leads to the creation of high-quality learners who can become future leaders and contribute to the nation's workforce. This study examined the influence of home and school related factors on the academic achievement of Junior Secondary School II students in Ogo-Oluwa Local Government. The research grounded in Behaviorist and Social Independence Theory, used a descriptive survey research design. The population included 1114 students while the total sample of 104 was selected for the study using a multi-stage sampling technique. Data was collected using Two research instruments. The first instrument was a self developed questionnaire titled HSFQ the second titled SSAAT. Descriptive data was analyzed with frequency and percentage while the inferential statistics was analyzed with Chi-square and multiple regression. The results showed that the level of academic achievement of Junior Secondary School II students in Social Studies was high (38.5%). The results show that home factors do not have a statistically significant relationship with students’ academic achievement in Social Studies (p > 0.05). Among the school factors, only teacher quality had a significant positive influence (β = 0.426, t = 3.022, p = 0.003). Overall, the combined effect of home and school factors did not significantly predict academic achievement (F(6, 97) = 1.954, p = 0.080).However, gender significantly moderated the influence of parental education, parental involvement, and instructional materials (p < 0.05), indicating that these effects varied across male and female students. The study concluded that teacher quality and the effective use of instructional materials significantly enhance students’ academic achievement whereas home related factors show limited influence. Gender moderates the relationship between home and school factors, suggesting that their effects on academic achievement differ between male and female students.
