This research focuses on investigating the energy challenges faced in running a city mall and the design approaches that can be adopted to sustainably design and run a city mall in Nigeria. Five case studies were investigated in this study to determine what interventions in design and material have been adopted both locally and internationally to achieve a mall that can be said to be sustainable and the mistakes made on the projects to avoid a repetition. This investigation helped to realise design approaches and materials that can be employed to achieve sustainability in a city mall design. The research concludes with the recommendations that can be adopted to achieve sustainability in a city mall design. Keywords; City mall, Sustainability, Sustainable design, Sustainable energy.
