dc.description.abstractAchieving gender equality is key for sustainable development and ethically imperative for human rights, dignity, and capabilities of women’s sustainable right. Redressing the disproportionate impact of economic, social, and environmental shocks and stresses on women and girls, which has undermined the enjoyment of their human rights and their vital roles in sustaining their families and communities, is also key for sustainable development. However, women's participation in Nigerian politics has been minimal and has serious implications for the attainment of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals 5 and 10. This study investigated women’s participation in politics and its implication for the achievement of the UNSDG 5, and 10. examined the key indicators of women's involvement in Nigerian politics, factors militating against participation of women in politics, current extent of women’s participation in politics, and implications of SDG 5, and 10. The study employed liberal feminism theory, modernity theory, and modernisation theory. The research employed qualitative method of data collection and analysis. The study finds that women's political participation in elective and appointive roles remain at 6.7 %, behind the Global Average of 22.5%, Africa Average of 23.4 %. The study recommends the implementation of legal funds to support female politicians in contesting any sort of electoral misconduct at all stages of the political process, and the implementation of a quota system across all levels of government. The study concludes that women’s participation in politics can be improved if the governance system insists on the global 35% affirmative action.
