Abstract
Leadership in the University system has to do with the ability to get things done with the support and cooperation of other people within the institution. Leadership in the Universities in Nigeria is handled by Vice-Chancellors and they are regarded as critical academic leaders because of the executive powers and roles attached to their offices. Vice-Chancellors play a crucial role in developing a high-quality education system and generating sufficient human resources to support and promote the socioeconomic and political progress of the nation. To achieve this purpose, it is imperative to have rigorous, clear, and well-defined selection processes in order to establish and maintain successful universities. Thus, the study examined Vice Chancellor’s Selection Conflicts and Organisational Cohesion in Selected Public Universities in Southwestern Nigeria. The theories adopted during the course of the research are the theory of collectivism, contagion and value added theories. Primary and secondary sources of data served as the sources of information gathering. Interviews were conducted with various stakeholders in the university environments. The study found out that the primary root of conflict in the selection of VCs is the encroachment of vested interests, especially among the power brokers in the society. Also, that professors and other learned elites in the ivory towers often descend so low as to engage in dubious activities in the selection of university leaders. The study concluded that there should be cohesion within all
stakeholders in order to minimise tensions in the universities. Based on this conclusion, the study recommends adherence to legal procedures, mitigation of external influences, inclusive stakeholder engagement, and enhancement of conflict resolution mechanisms, among others.
