Abstract

Since the return to democratic rule, there has been a heated debate about the real performance of Nigeria's local government administration. Several studies examined local government and service delivery however, much attention has not been given to examine the effects of local government administration through the lens of good governance in Ekiti State, Nigeria hence this study. The study introduced the background of the study, statement of the problem, aim and objectives. The study used descriptive research design, population of the study (358). Multistage sampling technique was utilized for the study. Structured questionnaires and interviews were utilised for data collection, the items in each of the instruments were relevant to the objectives of the study. The study revealed that transparency and accountability enable the citizens to hold public officers accountable for the use of public funds (75.4%). The result showed that active citizens involvement in political and economic decisions at the grassroots has increased via their orientation (75.3%). Furthermore, the results revealed that adherence to rule of law by the council officers in local government administration has ensure disciplinary action at the council is based on the provision of the law (75.4%). The study also showed that inadequate autonomy (74.5%); absence of security of lives and property (70.3%); embezzlement of public funds via inflation of contract sum (66.5%); and poor internally generated revenue by the local government (34.4%) as the notable challenges confronting local government administration in the attainment of good governance in the study area. The study concluded that there was an established nexus between local government administration and good governance in Ekiti State, Nigeria and recommend democratic system at the grassroots.
