Abstract
Ethno–religious conflicts are unavoidable aspects of human interaction. They arise from pursuit of different interests, goals and aspirations by individuals or groups. The study examined ethno - religious conflict in Southern part of Kaduna state and the role played by the media in those conflicts. To this end, the study used written documents in form of various literatures, such as magazines, newspapers, related journals and the internet, unpublished theses and reports were also employed as a make – up for missing links in the information from the internet and some literatures alike. The study made use of Liberal Reflection Theories which views media as a faithful reflection of reality, and also Radical Approach which believes that the canons of professionalism are not sufficient to sustain the claim that the media reflect objective reality. The study found out that information as a veritable tool for awareness has continued to influence people through media broadcasts, news, features and programmes towards disaffection rather than restoring relationships. Recommendations were made on ways the media could employ to prevent ethno – religious conflict through their
programmes, commentaries and discussions. The media need to appreciate the validity of pluralism, but they also need to value the persistence of ethnic primordial loyalties in the face of the expanding and detached forces of globalization. In conclusion, the media needs special trainings especially on how to report conflicts in such ways that would alleviate tensions and foster peaceful resolution of conflicts.
