Abstract

Abstract Sustainable airport facilities design and strategy contribute to reducing emissions of carbon globally. The general goal of this research study is to appraise the environmental and physiological impacts of carbon emissions on our immediate environment, airports having long-term effects and to know sustainable design strategies for minimizing its emission. The study of this thesis was carried out to respond to the need for sustainable strategies in designing and planning airport facilities. In this study, physical observations were secured with airports locally while international case studies were carried out via web research survey to examine various sustainability design ideas in existence at different. Population study of this research was done through a purposive sampling method by listing the Nigerian airports and airports already implementing sustainable measures both locally and internationally. Collection data was carried out by case studies, online research journals, and professional books related to the design topic. Presentation of results was done using descriptive statistics. Results showed that foreign airports used their locally sourced materials while Nigerian airports used Aluminum composite panels; Natural ventilation, alternative energy sources, and water conservation was disregarded. This study stresses the necessity to consider sustainability strategies in the design of airport facilities, and strategy measures that can be implemented to avoid the degradation the of environment, boost the well-being of airport workers and passengers, and thus reduce operational costs.
